Project: GLBT - Remembering International Bear Rendezvous
logoFrom 1995 to 2011, the Bears of San Francisco - BOSF produced International Bear Rendezvous (IBR), an annual gathering that celebrated older, larger, hairier, ruggedly masculine gay men. Guests arrived from throughout the U.S. and beyond for a Presidents Day weekend of fun, fundraising and friendship, culminating in the International Mr. Bear competition on Sunday evening. For this living history panel, organizers and participants will come together for an evening of laughter, insight and remembering about this foundational event for the bear community.

PANELIST BIOGRAPHIES Paul Almy joined the Bears of San Francisco (BOSF) in 1994. He served on their board of directors from 1997 thru 2004, and as vice president from 2001-2004. At International Bear Rendezvous (IBR), he was contestant coordinator from 1998 until its final year in 2011. In addition, Paul also assisted with advertising, auction, registration, and other miscellaneous jobs at IBR.

Mark Katzenberger has been part of the bear community and the Bears of San Francisco (BOSF) since the mid-1990s. From 2000, when he was also a contestant as Mr. SF Bear, through 2004, he was a member of the BOSF board of directors and International Bear Rendezvous (IBR) steering committee. Through the years, he did pretty much every volunteer position at IBR, including being a judge in 2009.

Jason Macario is a founding member of BOSF, serving as secretary from 1995-2001 and vice president from 2007-2009. He was on the planning committee for the first seven IBRs (1995-2001), serving as co-chair in 1999, 2000, and 2001. After a few years off, he returned to the IBR committee as Judge Coordinator for 2006-2011. He lives in his native San Francisco with his not-husband, whom he met at a BearHug just as BOSF was forming.

Larry Rivera, the original San Francisco “Call Bear,” has been involved in the bear community since its emergence in the 1980s. A Bay Area native, Larry was a founding member of the Bears of San Francisco (BOSF), and has been an active member of the organization and long-time member of the board of directors. He was emcee for four of the Mr. International Bear Contests. Larry currently is the vice president of BOSF and sits of the board of the SF Bay Area Leather Alliance.
