The San Francisco Museum and Historical Society is dedicated to preserving, interpreting and presenting the historical heritage of San Francisco. About The Society The San Francisco Museum and Historical Society is the common thread that binds San Francisco's past, present and future. Founded in 1988, SFMHS has more than 3,000 members and fulfills its mission of preserving Bay Area history through a broad spectrum of programs and special events, such as history walks, the Barbary Coast Trail and Standing Ovations - its annual celebration of San Francisco culture. The Society produces two publications: The Argonaut, a beautiful journal featuring photographs and in-depth reviews of our city's history; and Panorama, a quarterly newsletter for members that features upcoming programs and events including those of other Bay Area historical groups. The San Francisco Museum and Historical Society serves as the focal point for discovering the history of the Bay Area, including the creation and ongoing operation of a world class museum in San Francisco's Old Mint. This National Historic Landmark at Fifth and Mission streets will be transformed into an exciting new center where visitors can experience the stories San Francisco through state-of-the-art interactive exhibits.
